StoryLTD announces its upcoming no-reserve online auction of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art on 25 – 26 April 2017. Including paintings, sculptures and works on paper, the auction features leading modern and contemporary Indian artists.

A 1973 oil on canvas by Manjit Bawa (lot 29), whose works are characterised by flat colours and supple figures, leads the sale at INR 30 – 40 lakhs. A 4’ x 2’ painting by Anjolie Ela Menon (lot 28), one of India’s foremost women modernists, is estimated at INR 20 – 30 lakhs. Known for constantly experimenting with her art, this work combines her preferred medium of oil paints with gold leaf, which is traditionally used in Tanjore painting in South India. Sailoz Mukherjea’s work was a confluence of Bengal School and European techniques. An oil on board painting by Mukherjea (lot 2) is estimated at INR 12 – 15 lakhs.

A few paintings by modernists are on offer at more accessible price points. A series of small format paper works by F N Souza (lots 9-11, 39-41, 72-74, 107-109), some of which are chemical alterations and portraits in which the figure is undistorted, are estimated between INR 1 – 7 lakhs. Two works on paper by Jamini Roy (lots 1, 103) are being offered at INR 1.5 – 2 lakhs.

Also on auction are contemporary artists including Sujata Bajaj, Rekha Rodwittiya, Farhad Hussain, Varunika Saraf, Manisha Gera Baswani, Rajesh Ram, Chitra Ganesh, Reena Saini Kallat, Sudhanshu Sutar, T V Santhosh and Riyas Komu. Artist Chitra Ganesh is known for her digital prints that recall diverse cultural references, from comics to mythological narratives. A print by the artist (lot 137) is on offer at INR 1.6 – 2.24 lakhs. An acrylic on canvas painting by Farhad Hussain (lot 65), known for his vibrantly coloured canvases, is estimated at INR 2 – 3 lakhs.

The auction will be held online on storyltd.com, and is preceded by a viewing of select lots in Saffronart Delhi and Mumbai.
