3rd edition of Pune Biennale to commence in January 2017

The countdown to India’s uniquely community driven biennale begins as Pune Biennale Foundation officials flagged off the Pune Biennale 2017 at National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, recently. Dates, Curators, Venues, Artists, Projects and more was unveiled.

Pune Biennale is a global platform for exchange of ideas in contemporary art and visual art expression in the city. Pune Biennale will return with its third edition from 5th to 29th January 2017. The flagship show of Pune Biennale 2017 is titled as Habit_co_Habit which is curated by well-known art historian & curator Zasha Colah and art critic Luca Cerizza. True to its participatory nature, this edition of Pune Biennale also has several collateral projects that are created around the theme of “identity and self”. In these projects, the aim is to discover the meaning of one’s existence in different spheres of life through diverse mediums and forums including displays, installations, workshops, dialogues and seminars.

The main show ‘Habit_co_Habit’ and other associated programmes will take place in venues of historic importance along the popular J.M. Road. These include Modern High School, Municipal Printing Press, Mahatma Phule Museum, Pataleshwar caves precinct, Sambhaji Park, ABIL Subway and likewise. In addition, more than ten galleries in the city will also participate in the 3rd Pune Biennale.

While revealing the preliminary list of artists to be seen displaying their work at the upcoming edition of Pune Biennale, Curators Zasha & Luca said “We have been getting encouraging response from the entire art community for Pune Biennale 2017. Apart from receiving entries from emerging artists and creative individuals, we have got confirmation from leading artists of national and international repute.”

Pune Biennale 2017 recently kick-started its pre-cursor events which included events such as “a dialogue on contemporary art education by famous Indian artist Prabhakar Kolte” and “Ways of Making” by Sudarshan Shetty, celebrated artist and curator of Kochi Biennale 2016. Upcoming months will see more of such stimulating programs such as “a talk on contemporary art scenario in India by Abhay Sardesai, Editor of Art India magazine”; “insights on public art by Pooja Sood from Khoj International”.

A note from Dr. Kiran Shide, Managing Director, Pune Biennale Foundation, said, “Pune Biennale is a vibrant festival of art that’s making its presence felt on the international art map. It promises to be a spectacular event, creating spaces for creative manifestations in the city, thereby making art more accessible, and offering a platform for ordinary people to engage with art and artists.”

He further added, “We look forward to participation from across the length and breadth of the country to embrace the city’s creativity while connecting with great artists and thinkers.”

At the introductory event, Dr. Vishwajeet Kadam, President, Pune Biennale Foundation & Secretary, Bharati Vidyapeeth, said, “It gives me great pride to have India’s second Biennale being hosted in our home city – Pune, bringing in recognition and honour for Maharashtra as a culturally rich state. The idea with Pune Biennale is to showcase the artistic & cultural diversity the city has to offer to the global audience.”

Pune Biennale Foundation is guided by an august galaxy of Advisory Committee comprising of distinguished social figures including Sudarshan Shetty, Prakhakar Kolte, Abhay Sardesai, Arti Kirsloskar, Nitin Nayti, Pooja Sood, Ramprasad Akkisetti, Ritu Chhabria and Sabina Sanghavi. Along with this, a highly coherent team of Board members encompassing Dr. Vishwajeet Kadam, Varsha Chordia, Dr. Kiran Shinde, Ashwini Pethe, Sujata Dharap, Indranil Garai and Lisa Pingale are leading the forum.

Present at the event, leading abstract artist, Prabhakar Kolte shared his outlook on Pune Biennale 2017, congratulated all the Board & Advisory members for the launch and expressed his contentment to be part of this movement that is making its contribution felt at the national level.

Pune Biennale over the years has emerged as one of the most prestigious cultural institutions for the art community. With the last two successful editions, Pune Biennale has seen tremendous growth in stature. Last year, the event saw a turnout of over 100,000 visitors with display of 350 artworks by 200 artists participating from 30 cities and around 35 institutions & colleges. Driven by the phenomenal response, Pune Biennale 2017 is expecting increased participation pouring in from all corners.
