Anu Malhotra is one of India’s top filmmakers, having won over 17 National and 1 International award for her insightful documentaries, trend setting television programming and revolutionary awareness campaigns.
Anu is also a multi disciplinary artist – an exhibited photographer (Soul Survivors at the National Museum, New Delhi), published writer , designer (spaces, sets, interiors) and now an accomplished artist.
An intermittent painter in the early years, she’s given herself over to the power of painting for the last few years. Using an unconventional palette, the self-taught artist has created an interesting technique of layering colours to create landscapes and still-lifes that burst with colours. A bold experimentalist, she uses strong tones with rare confidence to create works that are replete with vigour and vitality.
Her latest show, Flow Dreams, will be exhibited at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, from 6 – 9 October, by Apparao Galleries.
This year Anu will exhibit part of her well appreciated art show, ‘Flow Dreams’, along with new works. There will also be interesting light installations and unique art objects on display.

Anu Malhotra’s ‘Flow Dream’ is a stream of surreal thoughts, with the delicate tracery of trances- A dream like state, and then she starts a dance of colours on Canvas- setting its own rules, moving to its own motion, it’s own particular, creative Pattern. The world, for the artist, is a kaleidoscope – a treasure-house of images tumbling into each other, colours spilling, merging, fading, gushing into infinite forms, revealing the infinite possibilities of life. Art for the artist Anu Malhotra, is not a pursuit but a life-practice.
What draws Anu in and moves her most are colours that she encounters in everyday life. These are the colours she recreates in her paintings, often in the wee hours of the morning.
A UNIQUE PAINTING STYLE
The artist Anu Malhotra uses neither brush nor spatula. Instead, she creates her pieces with acrylic paint, using plastic bottles, mugs, and even her arms and fingers to create each piece. Her large canvases are often stretched out on the floor as she paints.
